Psoriasis Home Light Therapy

Dutch researchers say specialist psoriasis light treatment is just as effective and safe when given at home as in Hospital.

Phototherapy with UVB light is rarely used in the UK because of limited availability and the amount of Hospital visits required. Although a study of 200 patients found the same reults with home treatment.

Up to 33% of the UK population are affected by Psoriasis

A course of treatment for those who have access to UVB treatment at local Dermatology units usually entails three visits each week for between eight to ten weeks. In the latest study patients from over ten Hospital Dermatology Departments were randomly chosen to receive either home UVB Therapy or Hospital based therapy. They found that the reults of having Home Treatment were equivalent to Hospital Light Therapy both in trems of safety and effectiveness of clearing the condition.

Those receiving home treatment reported a significantly lower burden of treatment and were more satisfied overall.

The Study Leader from the Medical Centre reported that many Dermatologists were not convinced of the safety and effectiveness of UVB Psoriasis Light Therapy but our theory was they should be equally safe - and one of the most important findings was that a lot of patients treated at home were more satisfied.

Patient choice is important and for some Psoriaisis sufferers managing their Light Therapy at home would be clearly preferable. It is crucial however that there is absolutely clear guidance and information on when this is appropriate treatment and how it shuld be managed for patients and clinicans.
